Hi folks,

I had the opportunity to do some critical thinking, as I wrote my journal for my philosophy class, which got me thinking ..Do we really know anything-something for certain? What exactly are YOU as a person sure of? Do you really exist, or were we simply made/designed to think so? Are our senses solely reliable or as independent on us as we are on them? Are our dreams extensions of reality? Or are our dreams reality hence, reality is a dream?

Yes! Kinda sounds crazy and “weird”, but according to a Philosopher Descartes’. Why do you believe what you believe, know what you know, and think what you think?

Well, here’s my breakdown/summary of Descartes’ radical reconstruction of knowledge.

Serving as the foundation for philosophical skepticism and closely related to a form of agnosticism (often referred to as hard agnosticism), this view states that humans are not capable of obtaining epidemiological certainty. That is to say, they are incapable of knowing anything with absolute assurance. Although, one might sincerely believe that what they know on a given matter is true, one cannot be 100% certain in that knowledge; therefore, there is always a possibility that one could be wrong. One misconception amongst humans is besides the fact that it seems relatively intuitive and common sense to most people, such a view also seems to be attractive in that, it promotes an attitude of humility with respect to one’s knowledge. However, common sense intuition doesn’t always yield truth.

Descartes did not believe that the information we receive through our senses is necessarily accurate. After the revelation he experienced on November 10, Descartes undertook his own intellectual rebirth. His first step was to throw out everything he thought he knew, refusing to believe in even the most basic premises before proving them to himself satisfactorily. In this act of demolition and reconstruction, Descartes felt it would be a waste of time to tear down each idea individually. Instead, he attacked what he considered the very foundation: the idea that sense perception conveys accurate information, and he developed several arguments to illustrate this point.

It has been said that the first question of philosophy is why is there something rather than nothing? But why accept the built in assumption that something exists. If we can’t know anything for certain and thus anything we believe has the potential to be false, then surely the assumption that something exists is subject to being false. So, yes! I believe that we are certain about the fact that we are not certain about anything. If you doubt existence, whether your own or in totality, even if you doubt whether existence exists then this doubt, is something. If nothing existed, then doubts and doubts about existence would not exist. Therefore, any doubts about existence, prove that something exists…. Right?

If we argue that we can’t know anything for certain, then this raises the question, are you certain that we can’t know something for certain? There are 3 possible answers to this, which are; I. Yes. II. No. III. I don’t know.

If they answer yes, then this is self refuting, as they are claiming to know with certainty that nothing can be certain.
If they answer no, then they must concede that it is possible that we can know something for certain, thus refuting the claim that we can’t know anything for certain.
If they answer I don’t know, then once again, they must admit that it is possible we can know something for certain, thus refuting the claim that knowing something for certain is impossible. There is absolutely a possibility that our beliefs are false and can be proven wrong in certain circumstances, since most of our beliefs are nurtured anyway- ie our past experiences, past “mistakes”, things seen in the past and so on.

Descartes had to question everything because he has come to realize that in his youth he acquired “false opinions” about the world and built upon them. Since he cannot go through all of his opinions one by one to determine which are true and which are false (it would take too long and might even be impossible, in practice), he will attack the general principles on which he arrived at his beliefs about the world. The general principle on which he based his beliefs about the world was: whatever the senses ‘told’ him about the world was true. (If you were asked why you believe that it is true that, e.g., there is a desk in front of you, you would respond, “Because I see it”. So your belief is based upon, or derived from your sense perception of a desk. And in general, all, or the vast majority, of the things that you believe to be true, you believe to be true because of the sense perceptions that you have. So the principle on which your beliefs rest is: SENSE PERCEPTION IS RELIABLE. However, it is important to note that by the end of meditation, Descartes doubts not merely his senses, but his own reasoning about matters that are independent of his senses, such as arithmetic and geometry. Thus, the doubts of Meditation are not only directed at the senses.

Hence, the point of doubting, however, is to arrive at that which cannot be doubted- certainty!
